Non-monogamous Therapy
What is Non-Monogamous Therapy?
Is non-monogamous therapy the same as traditional couples counseling? Yes and no. Couples counseling is typically designed for a pair who practice monogamy. They may be seeking guidance for unresolved conflict, intimacy issues, or an inability to communicate needs. Non-monogamous therapy or poly-affirming therapy is intentionally inclusive of individuals and partnerships within consensual non-monogamy (CNM). This might include polyamorous, open, or other relationship structures, many of which include LGBTQIA+ or queer individuals.
How Can Non-Monogamous Therapy Help?
While poly relationships can be deeply fulfilling, they’re not immune to challenges. Non-monogamous therapy can be tailored to include all partners at once or focus on the needs of one individual within a CNM dynamic; even when the issues extend beyond the relationship itself.
Common areas of focus include:
Setting and respecting boundaries
Strengthening assertive and effective communication
Managing difficult emotions like jealousy, resentment, or anxiety
Navigating social stigma and discrimination
Reigniting intimacy and meeting sexual needs
Balancing time, energy, and emotional availability among partners
Repairing trust and resolving conflict
